‘I’ve been thinking about what you said,’ Fallon says when we’ve finished our tea. ‘You know, about how you wish you could be in charge of the police investigation.’

‘Yeah.’ I give a short bitter laugh. ‘Fat chance of that, though.’

‘Agreed. But what if you started your own investigation? I mean, aside from the official police one, obviously. Like you said, you know Sam better than anyone else.’

I open my mouth, ready to give her a hundred reasons why it won’t work, but I can’t actually think of a single one.

‘What harm will it do?’ Fallon’s voice rises an octave as she gathers momentum. ‘I can help you! We won’t be interfering in anything the police are doing. We can draw up a bit of a plan now and just see how it goes.’

She looks at me, her eyes sparking in anticipation of my reply.

A tiny flicker starts up inside my chest. Anything would be better than just sitting here doing nothing. But then the worries begin.

‘Mum – the police – they won’t like us doing anything on our own . . . and how can we investigate without the press finding out?’

‘You’re here without them knowing, aren’t you?’ Fallon remarks. ‘And you went to the food bank unnoticed. Thanks to your shortcuts across the estate.’

‘They recognized me there, though.’

‘You just need a better disguise – that’s all. Wrap a scarf around your mouth and borrow a different jacket. My dad has a couple in his wardrobe. I can help you with that too.’

‘OK,’ I say slowly, warming to the idea. ‘I suppose we could try, at least.’

‘That’s the spirit.’ Fallon claps her hands. ‘I’ll get a pen and paper.’

Twenty minutes later, we sit together and stare at the list Fallon has made.
